| | Obviously, the best way to drop fat! | | by: Coach Hale - Sun Jun 13 2010, 07:56AM | Muscle tissue is more metabolically active than fat tissue. In fact, when comparing muscle tissue and fat at rest, muscle tissue burns about 300% more calories. Thus, it is obvious that gaining muscle is one of the best ways to drop fat, or at least that’s what “They Say”.
While at rest, skeletal muscle burns 13-kcal/kg/body weight per day (approx 5.9 kcal/lb); adipose tissue burns 4.5-kcal/kg/body weight per day (approx 2 kcal/lb). Three hundred percent is not so impressive when considering the absolute values of calories burned. Exchanging 10 lbs of fat for muscle means your caloric expenditure will increase 40 kcals per day.
40 kcals= ½ medium fruit, between ¼- 1/3 can tuna, less than 2 oz lean meant
Of course, if you follow the correct supplement regimen you may add 20-30 lbs of muscle (this might be a fallacy??), which would result in burning 80-120 more kcals per day.
In conclusion, exchanging fat for muscle increases energy expenditure. But, that 300% increase amounts to very little when considering the absolute value.
